Revisiting 2016
Year in, year out. Another 365(+1) days have flown by, and now it's time to look back and reflect on the things they brought us to prepare for the next chapter. Without going in too deep (after all, we're here to talk about fashion), let's see what's been a complete success in 2016.
If there's an accessory that every single one of us has worn this year, that has to be the choker. It all started with a throwback to the 90's last year, and it looks like the trend is here to stay. The plain black velvet ones were set aside to leave room for more elaborated designs, like statement chokers or the ones that imitate cowboy belts.
It was quite hard to choose this one giving all the stylish girls out there, but after narrowing it down to five of the most stunning ones, Bella Hadid has to be the winner. We could say that this has been the year she has started to build her own career apart from her sister Gigi, and her style has evolved as well. She tends to go for simple and wearable outfits that we all can copy and adapt to our daily life, which makes her a good source of inspiration. New street style queen alert?
Is not unusual for fashion houses to change creative directors, but this year has been particularly important for some brands. Maria Grazia Chiuri left her position at Valentino for Dior, while Alessandro Michele, Demna Gvasalia and Jonathan Anderson consolidated their roles at Gucci, Vetements/Balenciaga and Loewe respectively. Being the 170 anniversary of Loewe this year, we have to give Jonathan Anderson the recognition he deserves for his work during the 3 years he's been in charge of the maison, as we hope he continues creating collections we all wish we could wear.
It must be almost impossible to find a street style picture from the last fashion weeks were someone isn't wearing one of the pieces above. Puma's clever choice choosing Rihanna as their creative director was proved when her latest collection started to be seen everywhere, especially the footwear. The combination of comfy sneakers and velvet (another one of the hits of the year) was infallible like nothing the brand had launched before.
The combination of fashion and film has always produced great results, so it seems natural to find great pieces in the fashion film area. Kanye West's short video for Balmain was probably the most hyped one, at least until H&M released their collaboration with the one and only Wes Anderson. How could this be anything but magnificent? If you haven't watched it already, you're still on time to gift yourself with a little piece of Christmas spirit.
And finally, we cannot give closure to the year without paying a little tribute to those who are not among us anymore. Sonia Rykiel, Franca Sozzani and Richard Nicoll, thank you for your contribution to fashion and the legacy you left behind. May you rest in peace.
