Watch, listen, read | July
- WATCH: The Neon Demon.
If someone asked me what's the oddest film that I've seen lately, I would probably say The Neon Demon. I'm a big fan of Nicolas Winding Refn ever since I saw Ryan Gosling rocking that satin bomber in Drive, so you can imagin how excited I was when I found out about this new movie. The plot follows Jesse (aka Elle Fanning doing an awesome job), an aspiring model who moves to LA to pursue her dreams and gets involved in the dark and dangerous side of the industry. If you liked Refn's previous works or films like Black Swan, I highly recommend that you check this one out.
- LISTEN: Frank Ocean.
I remember discovering Frank Ocean when his "it's a bad religion to be in love with someone who could never love you" became a popular line in the Tumblr world, but I never gave a proper listening to his music back in the day. That changed recently when I heard Pyramids playing in the back of a YouTube video and found myself starting Shazam in no time. Now that Spotify confirms me that channel ORANGE is the album that I've been listening to all month, I can only say that November can't come soon enough so that we can enjoy new music from this fella.
- READ: «Canada» by Richard Ford.
In my January reading recommendation, I mentioned that I had loved «The Goldfinch», by Donna Tartt. Sometimes I still think about that book, which is a clear sign of how much it meant to me. When I came across Richard Ford's novel and read the plot, it kind of reminded me of Theo Decker's story, which was enough to get me to buy it. Now that I've finished it, I can say that they are not completely similar, but they certainly have a way of telling the come of age of a boy who's been through a lot that makes you want to read it all at once.
