Fashion Imitates Art: A Midsummer Night's Dream
No one can deny that William Shakespeare has been a big inspiration in the art world for almost five centuries, and apart from his obvious contributions to literature, we can say that he did some good to fashion as well. This year marks the 400th anniversary of his death, and the tributes to his figure haven't stoped since April 23.
Just a few days ago, I was walking down Oxford Street when I came across Selfridges' windows. I was stunned when I saw that they had combined Shakespeare's plays with exclusive designs of some of the best fashion creators of the moment, from Alexander McQueen to J. W. Anderson. Running until September 24 in two phases (Act I, inspired by his comedies and Act II, inspired by the tragedies), you can't miss the chance to see this contemporary theatre if you are in London.
Aside from that wonderful campaign, some maisons were also inspired by the English playwright, as we were able to see in the Haute Couture week. Valentino was probably the best example of this, with dark clothes, brocades, organza gowns or high collars.
Now, if you want to incorporate some Shakesperian vibes to your wardrobe, take a look at the selection of items that Selfridges have put together for you.
